Hey Community

A few years ago I had a Europe-spec Audi A6 Avant that, yes, was the most awesome vehicle I've ever owned. It had an integrated auto-start capability that allowed me to set two different pre-start sessions so that when I arrived to the auto, it was warm, defrosted and ready for driving business.

I now own another awesome vehicle - my second Touareg.

I'm getting ready to ship this to Germany and I'm interested to get recommendations on after-market auto-start systems I can have installed on the vehicle. Being able to program starts is awesome...but I'll live with auto-start integrated into the key fob.

Danke - Chris

Chris, remote start is possible on your car. It's not easy, but possible. You'll lose a programmed transponder key, but in the end, it's worth it.

I'm in Paducah, KY, about 3 hours East of you, and run a mobile electronics shop. We actually just installed a Clifford alarm/remote start in mine and it was a lot more difficult. 6 diodes and 5 resistors, all on the ignition wires.

For your car, you can either use the idatalink ALCA interface, or the DEI Expresskit interface. Both use a transponder key and a couple wires wrap around the transponder to simulate the key being present. That has to be wired in, and taped up inside the dash. There's also an option from DEI that you can do 3X lock to start it. That consists of pressing the lock button 3 times on the OEM key fob to start the car. The part number on that is 4X10, and we normally do them for around $250 installed. The only disadvantage is that it only works from the range of the OEM remote. You CAN add SmartStart to that though, and have range where ever you have cell phone service.

We normally do Avital and CLifford remote starts, using the 4113, and 4103 for basic keyless/remote start, and the 4606X for a mid-grade remote start with options for 1 mile range.

My recommendation for you in STL is to find a reputable shop that sells DEI products. You can find me, and anyone there on their websites - clifford.com, viper.com, etc. A good remote start is only as good as the installer that installs it. If no one is near you, I'll be glad to help out.
