I got lucky searching and found the VW Part number for the kit I'm after, 7L0055204U-1. Looks like it is discontinued but may still be available through some sources. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to buy the whole kit or second hand.

Sorry to clutter up this very useful thread. Hope the info helps someone else.

Another suggestion

I just concluded a terrible time trying to retrieve the brake controller connection on our '16 TDI, and this after having done it successfully on our 2012*. I could feel something up there as described way back at the beginning of this thread, but the access was so small that I could not get my finger around it and there was certainly no room to grip with two fingers.

So, I made a hook from a coat hanger, snagged the wire bundle, and success. You might try a hook after you find what seems to be the connector.

* *Traded the 2012 TDI Lux for a 2016 LUX TDI. So far so good but I haven't towed with it yet. Maybe I'll update on towing elsewhere on these forums....

A week ago, I posted over on the "NOT ALL Touaregs are fitted with Brake Controller Wiring" thread (post 24) that my 2013 TDI Lux was missing the controller from under the dash.

Well thanks to the first entry over there, I decided that I had to know for sure so decided I had to access the right rear quarter and check the green socket. Initially I just popped off the rear light access cover and with a flashlight did manage to locate it behind a black socket. I stuck my phone in the hole and started taking pictures hoping to see the green connector clearly. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a clear shot so off the cover had to come. This was a little scary, what with all of the clips but I removed the two D cargo tie downs and removed the thin section of trunk floor. I wish I had know how to disengage that clip as I ended up breaking mine :frown2: (tip I think is to push the rear seat forward and slid that thin section towards the front of the car). Next up was the removing the light and rear scratch protector (all clips, managed to not break any :smile2:). Finally, the right rear cover. This is where I started very slowly but I managed to get the rear section loose enough to pull away and get a good view of the green socket. What do you know 4 wires (by feel and eventually sight). It looks like my car does have the wiring, so where is the connector under the steering wheel?

This time with the knowledge that it was "up there somewhere", I took off the fuse box panel and box itself and dropped the bottom cover has I had done before. I disconnected the light and this time I decided to figure out how to disconnect the ODB II connector and completely remove that cover. In doing that I was able to get my arm much higher up on the left side of the steering wheel (left hand drive) and this time I found the connector :grin2::grin2:. How I like to think about it is that there are separate sections going from left to right, my connector was in the next one over from the fuse box, right up there but I felt around and eventually got it.

The moral of this story is, if you think you don't have the brake controller connector, take a look at the green socket. If it is connected with 4 wires top and bottom, you have the connector. If I had to do it again, I might think about removing the trim section at the same height was the fuse box, with that off it would have been much simpler to find the connector as I would have been able to look and not just feel.

Thanks for everyone on this forum, without this information I would have gone ahead and done a wireless brake controller instead of the redarc I am going to install as soon as the weather improves.

I would think that all our cars has the connector somewhere and you found it. It would be far too expensive not to have pre wired and that all the looms are the same. I have a Porsche 928 and the first time I took the instrument pod off I found the car is pre wired for towing. It even has a dedicated turn indicator so the driver can tell if the trailer lights are working correctly. It is also pre wired for a Euro rear fog light and it was all stuffed into a small corner.
Good work

I recently purchased a 2015 V6 FSI. It came with the factory towing package installed. Does this mean there is a built in electric brake controller and wiring, or is it necessary to install them? Is the wiring for the brake controller in the same place on the T3/Gen 2 Touareg?
If the Touareg came with an OE hitch, there should be a 4 pin connector somewhere up behind the dash along the A-Pillar. It varies where people find it, as it cannot be seen until retrieved. Annoyance.

You, or a trailer tech, will hav eto make the connector adapter using VW parts. This will alow connection to the VW harness plug.

Thanks for all the posts on this topic. I spent a couple hours looking for the plug even after reading this as well as some other on-line info. I eventually found it left of where most people have. It was in gray foam tube which was folded back onto itself and then buried in the wiring guts. No portion of the plug was visible at all and actually very little of the foam. I eventually spotted a small bit of foam and worked at seeing more of that and then finally was able to pull it out enough to uncover the plug, but not enough with slack to do much more than that. Thankfully things went pretty smoothly after that. Thanks again!

The problem I had was the wires were so short.
I had planned on just splicing the cable for my Redarc Tow Pro and not spending all of the money for a plug that just added another failure point.
Instead I added that failure point (4 connections) and four more butt splices (8 connection points). not to mention the extra money.
If you have time an eastern European is selling the plugs and contacts where you don't need to buy the two repair wires at an extravagant cost.
The cost is $11.00 plus $5.00 shipping.
This is for the plugs on both sides with contacts.
I would have bought this, but the shipping takes a while longer.

I realize that this is an older thread, but the information (description and photos) shared at the beginning of this thread really helped me find the brake controller connector in my 2014 TDI with factory towing package. I spent a long time looking for the connector (hours). It is frustrating that VW apparently had no intention for anyone to actually use the towing capability of such a wonderful machine.

Hoping this helps someone, this was my experience:

* I used an adjustable headlamp, plus a second flashlight to see as best I could. I think the headlamp is the key to seeing exactly where you are looking.
*The foam surrounding the connector is a lighter gray than the darker gray "mat" that is also more visible under the dash. The lighter gray foam was "all the way up there" against the darker gray mat.
  • I saw the light gray foam surrounding the connector by looking up through the brake pedal arm cavity while laying on the footwell floor. I know some found it closer to the wall by the door.
  • In order to access the gray foam, I used a soup ladle with a long handle: 12"+ with a hook on the end of the handle (my wife's idea - she's awesome!) The connector was so far up under the dash that there was no hope of me reaching up in there with my hand and grabbing it. A coat hanger might work but might not be stiff enough.
  • I grabbed the gray foam with the hook on the handle and pulled it down a couple inches.
  • Removing the side panel over the fuse box was a key step. Remove the bolts holding the fuse box and move the fuse box out of the way. It was through that hole that I could fit my hand to actually grab onto the connector. But I couldn't grab that connector until pulling it down a couple inches and pushing it towards the door a little bit with the handle hook from underneath the dash.
  • The Tekonsha technical bulletin (TB) and other posters say to use an open relay. I found one at Advance Auto Parts: "Dorman" brand, "Universal 4-pin Relay 30 Amp 12V," Part No. 84601. The relay has the numbers stamped in the plastic housing next to each pin, and the numbers match those in the wiring diagram in the TB. I also bought a "Bosch" brand, "4/5 Wire Relay Socket," Part No. 85170 at Advance Auto Parts. This allows you to plug the socket into the relay, and then attach the brake booster wiring and other wiring to the socket wiring. I taped the unused 5th center socket wire out of the way so I wouldn't accidentally wire something to it.

I think everything else is straightforward, but finding the connector was the big challenge. I hope this helps somebody!

Brad.

I hope this post helps save someone the four hours I spent locating the connector.

The dealer was kind enough to provide a technical bulletin that showed the location of the pre wired brake controller connector. I dropped the panel under the steering column and contorted myself into a position to look up under the dash. Nothing visible, no connector, no foam cylinder, nada. Next I popped off the fuse box cover, and took out the two screws holding the fuse box in place. It obligingly flopped out of the way allowing a good look under the dash and best of all, no need for a chiropractor afterwards. Still nothing. Another two hours went by scouring the forums for help, looking at the technical bulletin, and skinning knuckles with hand under the dash. Still no joy. Had I not already owned a P3, I would have gladly opted for the RF option at this point, but I knew it had to be there somewhere. Eventually with my hand trough the fuse box hole, I found something with my figer tips completely hidden from view that was soft and squishy, foam like, and on further probing had wires coming out of it. Could this be it? I wiggled and tugged gently and was able to tease the foam out of its hiding place. I was then able to push back the foam enough to see the elusive connector. Oh joy, four hours later I had found it. Some people have described it as just being there dangling under the dash. Others swear they don't have one. I think a lot of cases might be like mine. I think an assembler, robot or human, probably doesn't know about the connector, or what it does, or maybe doesn't care. It then just gets stuffed up under the dash during assembly and sometimes ends up stuck way out of the way. I have attached some pictures that might help others in this same position. For me, if I looked up under the dash to where I eventually found the controller connector, there was a plastic wiring connector, that had a purple flash on it, above which the controller connector had been hidden completely out of view.

Now I need to go buy the VW mating connector and wires to complete the job, because the connector really doesn't have enough slack to allow any other type of connection to be made, and I think chopping the connector off would be a huge mistake. BTW if anyone is looking for a good location for a controller, on the flat dash panel under the light switch ssem to work. Care needs to be taken because behind there is a plastic duct part of the climate control system, and making holes in it accidentally would not be the best idea. Fortunately the left half of the lower dash panel has two screws holding it, one inside the fuse box cavity the other on the bottom edge. Remove the screws and pry it out gently but firmly to disengage the poppit connectors. This panel has a spot just below the light switch where there is about 0.25 inch clearance with the underlying dash panel. It's possible to drill a small pilot hole and insert short (0.375 inch) self tapping screws to hold the mounting bracket. A set square can be used to align the bracket with the left edge of the panel as there are precious few parallel or square lines on the panel to make a good alignment otherwise. When the panel is put back in position the unit will be nicely aligned facing forwards and horizontally even as required by most controllers. The controller is easy to see and operate in this position and even my long legs do not come close to hitting it either entering the vehicle, or sitting with a my left foot on the kick plate. The only possible drawback of this location would be the unit getting splashed by water on a rainy day.
Literally a life saver! I was about ready to give up and just go wireless. Thank you!

Screw it I'm reviving this it saved me hours of frustration today

My 2015 it was way up on top of the steering column behind the instrument cluster, hiding inside the foam tube.
Impossible to see. Can only be found by feel.
I could only fit my hand back there after uninstalling half the dash.
Ridiculous!

Don't think I would have ever found it without this thread.

Thanks!!!!!
